Dred Scott was an African enslaved in America who contested for his and his wife's freedom, and whose case made it to not only the Missouri Supreme Court but also to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Federal court decided that Black people were not legal citizens and had no right to bring any case to their court. This ruling of non-citizenship status was used as a tool of oppression for years to deny Melanated people rights such as land ownership, voting rights, and the right to patent inventions in America.
